NorthWood Boys Tennis battled Warsaw down to the final court Thursday night, with the Tigers earning a 3-2 victory in Northern Lakes Conference action. Warsaw was able to secure the team victory by sweeping the three singles positions, but the Panthers answered with a pair of wins in doubles play. NorthWood’s No. 2 doubles team of seniors Eli Heckathorn and Ethan Tompos provided the drama of the night. With Warsaw holding a 3-1 advantage in the team score, Heckathorn and Tompos were locked in a back-and-forth battle that saw all three sets decided by tiebreakers. The NorthWood duo captured the opening set 7-6 (3) before Warsaw responded with a 7-6 (5) victory in the second. With the match going the distance, Heckathorn and Tompos finished the night strong, winning the deciding tiebreaker 7-4 to take the third set 7-6 and secure NorthWood’s second team point. The Panthers also picked up a victory at No. 1 doubles, while Warsaw claimed all three singles courts to earn the 3-2 team decision. #1 S Nolan Tompos 12 vs. Henry Norton 12 (Warsaw - 0-6, 0-6) #2 S Carter Rose 10 vs. Ian Overman 11 (Warsaw - 2-6, 0-6) #3 S Jack Johnson 11 vs. Grant Boren 11 (Warsaw - 2-6, 0-6) #1 D Eli Heckathorn 12/Ethan Tompos 12 vs. Austin Klingman 11/Owen Nisen 10 (NW - 6-1, 6-0) #2 D Sebastian Chapman 12/Colton Ewers 11 vs. Jase Swanson 10/Hudson Victa 12 (NW - 7-6(3), 6-7(5), 7-6(4)) NorthWood’s junior varsity squad had a strong night, defeating Warsaw 5-2. The JV Panthers will return to action Saturday at Wawasee for the NLC JV Tournament. NorthWood will then close out the regular season Monday against Wawasee.
